The ancient kiva is reached by a fairly strenuous climb
in Utah's Canyonlands National Park. I used a 4x5 Super Cambo view
camera mounted on a Bogen tripod for this shot. The lens was a Nikkor
90mm wide angle. The contrast was quite extreme but I wanted detail
throughout the entire tonal scale, from shadows through highlights.
I used Tri-X film and gave the negative Normal minus 1 development
to reduce the overall contrast. To make a good, crisp print, I used
a fairly soft grade of paper combined with a Shadow Contrast Increase
Mask to strengthen the deep black shadows and bring life to the print.
The resulting print shows soft, gentle midtones through highlights,
and good, crisp detailed shadows. As usual, no artificial lights or
reflectors were used.
